Welcome to the Assessment

Congratulations on your successful application and we're glad to see you really want to work in technology.

This stage helps us to get an initial insight into how you think and what makes you tick. There are no trick questions and only a few right/wrong answers. We are most interested in how you align with the behaviours we are looking for and whether you have the basic building blocks to learn how to code well over a few months.

Introduction

We know many employers will ask you to complete psychometric tests and may even use a gamified process. We have done them too and know they can be repetitive, stressful and it is often hard to understand what they are assessing.

For these reasons we chose a company that invests in improving the candidate experience and providing feedback that includes advice on how to improve. We have all completed the games and think they are the best we have seen. Not only do we think they are a great option, we also believe the company is dedicated to continuous improvement and will strive to stay ahead of the game.

If you do have any feedback, then we would love to hear from you.

Why we do this:
We believe that anyone can learn to be better at problem solving, but due to the relatively short training period our trainees need to meet a baseline level from the start. We are interested in how you do it, not the final result, which is why we don't focus on coding at this stage.

Our Tips

You don’t need any coding experience or maths qualifications.
You can’t practise before starting but each game does include a short practice to make sure you know how to play. If you want do a mental warm-up, then we would recommend using apps like Lumosity or Elevate.

The results are not a simple pass or fail.
We are looking for a mixture of skills and behaviours and what you think is best may not be what we are looking for. Each game has an endpoint but 100s of datapoints are used to assess how you progress and complete each activity. You will be tempted to think “I did this and so my result should be higher or lower” (we did) but the complexity of the assessment means it is never that simple.

Relax and be yourself.
We are assessing fit and not whether you are “good” or “bad”. If you have what we are looking for then great. If you don’t then we believe there are great roles out there where you will fit and do well.

Ensure you won’t be disturbed and can focus for 45 minutes.
There are regular breaks but if you are disturbed at the wrong point it can be very stressful (Matthew found this out the hard way). We recommend using a laptop/desktop so turn off your phone or put it on silent and focus on enjoying the experience.

Look to learn from the experience.
Your results will include a link to further information on what was assessed and we recommend you read it and adopt anything you find helpful.

Introduction

If we think you have the problem solving potential then we want to better understand your mindset and behaviours. Working in tech does require the ability to learn and use technical skills but successful careers are also strongly driven by doing the right things at the right time.

In particular we are interested in:

  • Coachability, wanting to learn through persistence without fear of failure
  • Conscientiousness, by trying to do your best with attention to detail
  • Written communication

The assessment is a mix of multiple choice and long-form (but not too long) questions that focus on technology and professional skills, things that we cover in training. There are a few questions where you will need to work out the right answer but you don't need a particular technical skill.

To complete this assessment you will need to watch the video below and understand the key points. We recommend taking notes which you can later refer to.

If you have already watched the video the assessment should take you between 45 and 60 minutes.

We also recommend you go through our website and understand who we are and what we do. At the very least this will ensure this is something you really want to do.

Why we do this:
In work how you do things is at least as important as the final result. How you do things is a mixture of approach (or process) and behaviours. Our key behaviours are coachable, conscientious and proactive as candidates who show these are likely to develop quickly, do the best that they can and look to make a positive impact in training and with clients.
